Garry Stevenson - guitar:
A globe-trotting geotechnical engineer from Port Coquitlam, Garry played electric guitar with a rock ’n’ roll band in Papua New Guinea before moving to bluegrass and winning three Western Canadian Flatpicking Championships.  Garry is in his fourth decade playing with 5 On A String and leading the Vancouver bluegrass scene.


Greg Spatz - fiddle:
New England-raised Greg won the State of Maine fiddle championship and played along the West Coast before joining John Reischman and the Jaybirds, appearing on all seven Jaybirds albums, and releasing a stellar solo fiddle disc.  An award-winning novelist and short-story writer, Greg teaches at Eastern Washington University.

John Reischman - octave mandolin:
The California-born, Vancouver-based bandleader, composer and teacher has toured the globe and recorded on dozens of albums from bluegrass and jazz to Latin and folk music. A Grammy certificate holder, his Jaybirds are twice-Juno nominated and his acclaimed solo instrumental albums are packed with powerhouse originals.

Tammy Fassaert - bass:
The Vancouver songbird toured and recorded with Grammy nominee Laurie Lewis out of California before launching a career as a singer-songwriter with two fine solo albums.  A bassist and guitarist, Tammy has toured Europe with Dobro ace Sally Van Meter and recorded with Shearwater on Vancouver Island, where she now lives.


Trent Freeman - fiddle:
The Comox Valley fiddle phenom is a Juno and Canadian Folk Music Award winner for his work with the progressive-trad fiddle quartet Fretless, recording four albums with them and another with the electro-pop trio Speaker Face.  Trent played bluegrass with the Pine Siskins and is a noted videographer.

Nick Hornbuckle - banjo:

Now based in Nanaimo by way of Seattle, Nick’s unique two-finger banjo style has graced all seven Jaybirds albums. A composer and devotee of old-time music, he has a Juno nomination for the second of two solo instrumental albums, and Canadian Folk Music Award nominations for both.

Valerie Bailey - bass:
A long-time mainstay of the Vancouver bluegrass scene, Val has anchored many Pacific Bluegrass club jam sessions with her 1947 Kay bass.  Over the years she’s played with numerous local bands including the Bluegrass Princesses, Mountain Bluebirds and The Still Blue.


Caridwen Irvine-Spatz - fiddle:
The Manitoba-born fiddler and luthier has recorded with her husband Greg on two albums with Washington State world-folk quartet Mighty Squirrel, and a duet disc where she sings in several languages. Caridwen built the fiddles that she and Greg now play out of their Spokane home.


Miles Zurawell - dobro:
Raised in rural Alberta and now Victoria-based, Miles plays and teaches resophonic guitar and banjo. He toured and recorded with Western Canada’s country-bluegrass roadshow Nomad Jones, and has played with the Greg Blake Band, Zachary Lucky and Old Paint.
